About
CMIP7 offers a new opportunity to confront Earth system models with observations over an extended historical period with realistic external forcings. This hackathon will analyze CMIP7 simulations as they become available, examining how well this new generation of models with updated forcings represents historical trends and multidecadal variability.
The aim is to understand the relative roles of forced change and internally generated variability in historical trends, identify the physical processes involved, and assess the ability of CMIP models to reproduce them. The ultimate goal is to spur research towards focused publications ahead of the IPCC AR7 deadline (March 15, 2027).
The hackathon will consist of some lectures and tutorials on CMIP data analysis with the majority of the time spent hacking

Apply
Participation is by application, and applications are due October 31, 2026. The hackathon is open to all career stages.
Capacity at each hub is limited, and a limited amount of travel support is available thanks to Spark Climate Solutions and the CMIP IPO. Priority for travel support will be given to early-career researchers (within 10 years of PhD).
If we receive more applications than places, or more requests for travel support than funding available, we will select participants based on career stage and the relevance of their interests and proposed research to the hackathon goals.

Capacity at each hub is limited. If we receive more applications than places, we will select participants based on career stage and the relevance of their interests and proposed research to the hackathon goals.
Is travel support available?
A limited amount of travel support is available thanks to Spark Climate Solutions and the CMIP IPO. Priority will be given to early-career researchers (within 10 years of PhD). If requests exceed available funding, support will be allocated using the same criteria as participant selection.
